The Break-In

Let’s face it; I’m not the type of girl who attracts boys to climb in her bedroom window.  They have three better windows to go through in this house anyway, if you get my drift.  So when I heard the knock, I was terrified, not intrigued.  I couldn’t tell who it was up on the ladder, either.  I was about to scream for my sisters to come help, when the ladder broke the window and whoever he was came crashing through with a shout.

He landed on my bed, and with dread I saw the back of a white uniform.

“Not you!” I yelled.

From the bed came a muffled, “Um… prepare for trouble?”

I reached for a pokeball but with a shudder I realized that Psyduck was not what I needed right now.

“It’s not what you think!” James yelled.

“You mean you’re not hear to cheat on Jesse?”  I asked.

He sat up and looked up at me.  “I mean I’m not here to steal your Pokemon!  I thought you were wandering around in the woods with those kids anyway!”

Then it hit him what I had said.  “Jesse and I are none of your business anyway, twerp.”

Then he looked at his finger.  “Can I have a band-aid?  I think I cut myself.”

Suddenly I heard a knock on my door.

“Oh great, you woke up my sisters,” I complained.  “How am I going to explain this?”

Violet was the first one to come through the door.  “Next time tell your boyfriend to use the front door, Misty…”  She trailed off when she saw James.

“Whoa, I was joking!”  She turned around, “Hey, she really does have a guy in here!  Check it out!”

Daisy and Lily came in behind her.

“Hey, did he come in the wrong room or what?  He can’t be here to visit Misty.”

“Would you shut up!”  I yelled.

James came over and stood next me.  Then he drawled, “Well, I suppose your sisters can’t help being jealous of you, Misty.”

Daisy stared at him, “Yeah, right, um, whatever…”

The three of them backed out nervously.

I turned to him.  “That was sort of almost nice of you, James.  But you’d better explain what’s going on or I’ll have one of my pokemon toss you back out the window.”

“I thought you weren’t here, and I was coming here to… OK… I was coming here to steal your Pokemon Princess dolls.”

“Are you out of your mind?”  I asked.  Why was I sitting here talking to him anyway?

He started blushing.  “See, the thing is, I really wanted to impress Jesse, and I thought that might work.”

“Look,” I said, “Jesse lost those dolls fair and square, and I don’t really think it would make her that happy if you stole them from me.  It might just remind her that she lost.”

He nodded, and looked sad.

Togepi came waddling into the room then, making his little squeaky noise.  James reached down distractedly and patted him on the head.

“I thought you hated Togepi,” I said.

He shrugged.  “I don’t know, he’s sort of cute.”

I couldn’t believe James could act so much like a human being.

“Anyway, I’m not giving you my dolls!”

He looked even sadder.  “Yeah, I don’t have much of a chance with Jesse anyway I guess…”

“Oh, come on, I’m sure that’s not true,” I said.  I did feel sure, though I don’t know why.  It’s not like these people are my friends.

“Oh… here…”  I finally said.  I went to the closet and dragged out a box of Princess dolls.  “You board up the window before you leave and I’ll give you these.”

“You’re giving me your dolls after all?”  James asked in astonishment.

“Are you kidding?  These aren’t mine.  I think this is one of Violet’s sets.  Do you have any idea how many of these we have lying around?”

James looked confused, but took the box.

“Good luck with Jesse,” I added.

He blushed and murmured “Thanks.  And your sisters really will be jealous of you someday, I’d bet on it.”

“Aren’t you going to make a last minute stand and try to capture my Pokemon or something?”  I asked.

He shook his head.  “I’ve got enough of a headache from going through the window once, I’ll skip it.”

I went into the spare room and he boarded up the window.  I’d wait until the morning to laugh at my sisters.
